NBFC must be incorporated as a company (Pvt Ltd or Public Ltd) under the Companies Act 2013 before applying to RBI.

How long does NBFC registration take?
The entire process including company incorporation and RBI approval typically takes 3–6 months, depending on document completeness and RBI processing time.
What activities can an NBFC carry out?
Lending, investment, hire purchase, leasing, insurance (with IRDAI approval), chit funds (with state approval) and other financial activities. NBFCs cannot accept demand deposits.
What is the difference between a bank and an NBFC?
NBFCs cannot accept demand deposits (savings/current accounts), do not form part of the payment and settlement system, and their depositors are not covered by the Deposit Insurance Scheme.
